Penn National Golf Community is located in the heart of the beautiful and scenic Cumberland Valley, in a land of fertile farmland and rich ore deposits. The region was settled over three hundred years ago, first by the Scots-Irish and then the Germans. During the nation's early history, Pennsylvania was a frontier state and a gateway for settlers headed to the West. The Cumberland Valley was the setting for numerous skirmishes and battles during both the French and Indian War (1754-1760) and the Civil War (1861-1865). Through this countryside in the summer of 1863, the Confederate Army marched en route to the town of Gettysburg just 18 miles away, beginning one of the bloodiest and most costly battles of that conflict. Many reminders of those bygone days still remain, with large family farms, old covered bridges, historic buildings, and battlefield monuments faithfully maintained for posterity.

Penn National's heritage is intricately intertwined with the history of our country, and we
work hard to preserve the historic landmarks on our property. In the early 1800s, Pennsylvania was a major iron producer for the newly birthed nation. The land that is now Penn National was at the center of one of Pennsylvania's primary iron producing regions and is only a mile from the famous Mont Alto Furnace. In fact, during the construction of the Iron Forge golf course at Penn National, a small limekiln, dating to the early 1800's, was uncovered behind the 18th green. The kiln has been preserved, and guests are welcome to visit there and learn more about early iron making and its role in Pennsylvania's history.

The pre-Civil War White Rock Manor House forms the centerpiece of the 52-room Penn National Inn. Built in 1847, the Manor House preserves its original Georgian architecture, while providing our guests with every modern convenience. Visited in its heyday by both Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart (Confederate Generals), White Rock Manor was one of only a few area homes that escaped being looted and burned to the ground by the Confederate Army in 1864. Penn National Golf Course Community is dedicated to preserving our past while thoughtfully building for our future.
